European leaders will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the White House.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said on the 17th on X (formerly Twitter), "At the request of President Zelensky, I will attend the meeting with President Donald Trump and other European leaders at the White House tomorrow."
According to Reuters and others, President Zelensky's trip to the U.S. will also include Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany.
The Elysee Palace in France also announced that President Emmanuel Macron will visit Washington. The Elysee said in a statement, "The goal is to achieve a fair and sustainable peace that guarantees the core interests of Ukraine and the security of Europe through cooperation between Europe and the U.S."
Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland, who is known to have built rapport with President Trump through golf, also noted that he will attend the Washington meeting on Monday, stating, "This meeting will be hosted by President Trump."
President Zelensky and the European leaders seem to be meeting with President Trump to persuade him, who has been close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. There are concerns that if President Zelensky meets Trump alone, he may be pressured into making territorial concessions.
Before heading to the U.S., President Zelensky will visit Brussels, Belgium, in the afternoon to meet with President von der Leyen. The two will also attend a video conference of the 'Alliance of Will' for post-war security guarantees for Ukraine, led by the leaders of the U.K., France, and Germany. It is expected that the participating leaders will discuss President Putin's proposals conveyed through President Trump following the Alaska summit during this meeting.
President Putin is reported to have suggested at the summit on the 15th that if Ukraine withdraws from Donbas, he would formally promise not to attack Ukraine or European countries based on the current front lines.
