An accident occurred where a suspension bridge collapsed at a tourist site in Xinjiang, China.
On the 7th, state-run CCTV reported that at around 6 p.m. the previous day, the General Bridge located at the Shata tourist site in the Zhaosu County of Ili Prefecture in Xinjiang suddenly collapsed, resulting in the deaths of five people on the bridge and injuries to 24 others.
According to the report, the wire supporting the bridge suddenly broke, causing the suspension bridge to tilt to one side. Some tourists crossing the bridge fell into the river, while others became trapped on the bridge.
A tourist named Dong, who was at the scene, said, "The suspension bridge consists of a total of three sections, and when I was walking near the middle of the first section, the right wire of the bridge suddenly broke," adding that "some nearby shepherds voluntarily mounted horses to search for people who had fallen into the water along the river."
Subsequently, the Shata tourist site was temporarily closed for safety inspections. Local media reported that this bridge had tilted to one side in June of last year as well, prompting enhanced inspections.
