Amidst a racial controversy surrounding an American Eagle Outfitters jeans advertisement modeled by Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, a group led by U.S. President Donald Trump, known as MAGA (Make America Great Again), has come out in support of the ad.
On the 4th (local time), President Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, 'Registered Republican Sydney Sweeney has launched the hottest ad right now,' adding, 'It's an American Eagle ad and the jeans are flying off the shelves. Keep it up, Sydney!' Following this, the stock price of American Eagle jumped more than 20% during trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
Earlier, Vice President JD Vance also appeared on a podcast on the 1st, stating, 'It's an ordinary beautiful American girl doing a jeans advertisement, but they completely lost their reason over this issue,' expressing, 'I want to ask if they learned any lessons from the November 2024 election.'
On the 4th, the Ministry of National Defense posted a photo of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wearing jeans on X (formerly Twitter), stating, 'The Secretary of Defense has good jeans.' This was taken directly from the advertisement.
Previously, American Eagle unveiled a new series of advertisements featuring Sweeney as a model last month. At that time, the company crafted the ad slogan, 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,' taking advantage of the homophony between 'jeans' and 'genes' in English.
Since then, some criticized the ad for promoting white supremacy, citing that Sweeney is a blonde with blue eyes.
