The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 1st (local time) that non-farm jobs in the U.S. increased by 73,000 in July compared to the previous month.
This figure is about 27% lower than the expert estimate of 100,000 released by Dow Jones. The unemployment rate was 4.2%, matching expert expectations.
The Labor Department also significantly revised the employment growth figures for May and June. While it is common to adjust previous statistics, a revision of more than 200,000 is unusual.
The previously announced employment increase for May was 144,000, but the adjusted figure released today has decreased by 125,000 to 19,000. The job increase for June was revised down from 147,000 to 14,000, a decrease of 133,000.
