Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney, 27, has recently been embroiled in controversy over a jeans advertisement related to white supremacy.
On 1st, reports from foreign media outlets including The Washington Post and NBC said that Sydney Sweeney's appearance in American Eagle's "Good Jeans" advertisement is facing criticism for overtly promoting white supremacy and Nazi propaganda, which aired on the 31st (local time).
The controversial advertisement features the title "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," employing a play on words with the similar-sounding "jeans" and "genes."
In the advertisement, Sweeney says while wearing jeans, "Jeans are inherited from parents. Sometimes they even determine hair color, eye color, and personality."
The final scene closes with a close-up of Sweeney's blue eyes, ending with the phrase "My jeans are blue."
In another advertisement, the phrase "Great Genes" appears with the word "Genes" crossed out, replaced with "jeans," further fueling the controversy.
Netizens criticized that the advertisement implies that the genes of blue-eyed blondes are superior in order to emphasize the excellence of the new jeans.
They also pointed out that by idealizing specific genetic traits, it evokes associations with "eugenics," a discriminatory theory aimed at selecting superior genes, which has become taboo due to its role in the Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany.
American Eagle has not yet released an official statement regarding the advertisement controversy.
Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney, who gained fame from the HBO drama "Euphoria," has appeared in projects like "The White Lotus" and "Madame Web." He also drew attention in May when he launched a soap containing his bathwater.
