The European Union (EU) announced on the 24th (local time) that a tariff agreement with the United States is 'within reach'.
On the same day, Olöf Gill, spokesperson for the EU Commission on Trade, noted during a regular briefing that "currently, intensive communication is happening daily at both the working level and the political level" regarding the negotiations with the U.S. He added, in response to a question about whether it is different this time after previous near-final agreements fell through, "We believe that the results of the agreement or negotiations are within reach."
Earlier, the EU publicly stated on the 9th that it could conclude a so-called 'principled agreement' with the U.S. within a few days. However, on the 12th, U.S. President Donald Trump suddenly sent a letter stating that a reciprocal tariff of 30% would be imposed starting August 1. It is currently reported that the agreement is being finalized to apply a tariff rate of 15% on most EU products sold in the U.S.
There are speculations that only President Trump's final decision remains.
President Trump claimed during a speech at an artificial intelligence (AI) summit held the day before in Washington, D.C., that "we are seriously negotiating with the EU, and if they open the market to U.S. corporations, I would propose lowering tariffs."
