The White House released the details of the agreement with Japan on the 23rd (local time) and evaluated, "This agreement is not just a trade agreement. It will be an agreement that strategically reshapes the U.S.-Japan economic relationship for the American people."
According to the fact sheet released by the White House that day, Japan will invest $550 billion in the United States to enhance "accessibility for U.S. exports" and strengthen key supply chains, committing to support U.S. workers, communities, and corporations over decades.
Specific investment areas include ▲ energy infrastructure production such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) ▲ semiconductor manufacturing and research ▲ guaranteeing access to key mineral extraction, processing, and refining ▲ production of pharmaceutical and medical products ▲ construction of commercial and defense vessels, modernization of existing shipyards, etc.
The White House noted, "The U.S. will take 90% of the profits generated from this investment" and "ensures that American workers will enjoy the majority of the benefits." Regarding the application of a 15% tariff on Japanese products, it stated, "This will contribute to reducing the trade deficit with Japan and restoring greater balance."
Japan will increase imports of U.S. rice by 75% and significantly expand import quotas in the future, and it has decided to purchase $8 billion worth of U.S. agricultural products, including corn. Japan has also lifted long-term import restrictions on U.S. cars and trucks and agreed to accept U.S. automotive certification standards concerning (environmental and safety issues). The export process for U.S. cars has been streamlined.
The White House stated, "This agreement has established a framework for cooperation centered on U.S. industry, innovation, and labor" and "President Trump has once again achieved an agreement that no one else could achieve." Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary leading the 'tariff negotiations', appeared on MSNBC that day and said, "President Trump is the world's best negotiator, and the agreement with Japan is a significant milestone," adding, "I hope other countries will follow Japan's lead."
