Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on the 7th (local time) that he has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Online, controversy is brewing, with fake news spreading that President Trump would start a war against Norway, where the Nobel Committee is located, if he does not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to foreign media including the Agence France-Presse (AFP), Prime Minister Netanyahu delivered the letter of nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump during a dinner with him at the White House in Washington, D.C.
Netanyahu explained the reason for his nomination, stating, "He is building peace in one country, in one region, even at this moment."
This move by Netanyahu is seen as an attempt to curry favor with President Trump. He also noted that Israel will achieve peace with Palestinian neighbors who do not wish for the destruction of Israel, while asserting that "security sovereignty is always in our hands."
Regarding the "two-state solution" for coexistence between Israel and Palestine, he emphasized that "Palestine must have full control over themselves, but they must not have the authority to threaten Israel."
Additionally, in response to reporters' questions regarding the change of government in Iran, he stated that it depends on the decision of the Iranian people.
False claims are spreading online that after Netanyahu's remarks, President Trump threatened to bomb Norway if he does not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to European media Euronews, posts circulating on social media such as X (formerly Twitter) quote President Trump as saying, "I brought peace by blowing up (the Iranian nuclear facility). Give me the Nobel Prize before bombing Norway," accompanied by a photo of him talking on a mobile phone and the phrase "drop the bomb of peace."
This suggests that President Trump would pressure Norway, which selects the Nobel Peace Prize winner, by citing last month's bombing of U.S. Iranian nuclear facilities and the ceasefire pressure that concluded the "12-day war" between Iran and Israel.
However, President Trump has never made such statements in an official capacity.
Earlier, on the 26th of last month, a satirical media outlet named the "Borowitz Report" published a similar article in the form of an article on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in The Hague, Netherlands.
This article contained details that President Trump claimed on the second day of the NATO summit that Norway was treating him "very unfairly" and threatened, "If I do not receive the peace prize, I will get rid of it."
President Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times both domestically and internationally, but has not achieved an award. He has expressed dissatisfaction, mentioning in the past that the Nobel Committee gives peace prizes only to progressives.
