Microsoft (MS) will undertake its second large-scale restructuring this year, foreign media including Bloomberg and CNBC reported on Feb. 2 (local time).
MS plans to lay off about 9,000 employees, nearly 4% of its total workforce. The restructuring targets various departments worldwide.
According to CNBC, MS noted that the layoffs are intended to reduce the number of managers between front-line employees and top executives.
An MS representative said regarding the restructuring, 'We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to position the company and teams optimally to succeed in a dynamic market.'
Bloomberg analyzed that recent technology corporations are reducing their workforce in an effort to cut other expenses while investing in artificial intelligence (AI) development.
MS previously announced a large-scale layoff plan in May, laying off about 6,000 employees. This marks the second large-scale restructuring this year. In 2023, MS also cut 10,000 jobs.
