Harvard University has canceled the tenure of Francesca Gino, a star professor at the Business School who has faced allegations of data manipulation, and the dismissal was reported by NBC News and others on the 27th (local time).
Professor Gino, born in 1978, has served as an associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School since 2010. Her main research topics include "integrity" and "ethical behavior," but allegations have been raised since 2021 that Gino has manipulated data for at least the past decade.
Ultimately, Harvard Business School launched a formal investigation into research misconduct based on reports and concluded, after 18 months of investigation, that Gino had committed research misconduct by manipulating data in at least four studies.
Following the unpaid leave in June 2023, Professor Gino has now received the cancellation of her "tenure" as well. According to the student newspaper Harvard Crimson, this is the first cancellation of tenure since the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Council on Education (ACE) officially outlined principles regarding tenure and dismissal to protect academic freedom in 1940.
