It has been found that the light breakfast of Americans is no longer light due to rising prices and other factors.
According to Mirae Asset Securities on the 17th, the so-called 'morning set' consisting of toast, bacon, cheese, eggs, and coffee averaged $3.23 as of March this year. This is a 73% increase compared to $1.87 in early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is linked to price increases. The price of coffee rose 68%, from $0.22 to $0.37 over the past five years. Bacon, bread, and cheese also recorded an increase of around 30%.
The burden of egg prices has increased. The price of eggs surged more than four times from $0.24 in early 2020 to $1.03 last month. The proportion of eggs in the total price of the morning set also increased by about 19 percentage points, from 13% in early 2020 to 32% last month.
What if one were to have the same meal in Korea? Based on the price information of daily necessities from the Korea Consumer Agency, a simple calculation shows it to be around 4,500 won, indicating no significant difference.
However, in the case of dining out, the basic price of the American 'morning set' soared to between $10 and $20 due to the need to pay for additional services and tips, highlighting the gap.
