The Italian prime minister sparked controversy by gifting chocolate spread "Nutella" to the British royal couple during their state visit to Italy.

According to the British Telegraph on the 13th (local time), Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister, gifted two jars of Nutella, a representative product of the Italian confectionery company Ferrero, to King Charles III and his wife, who visited Italy last week.

The jars of Nutella gifted by Prime Minister Meloni were engraved in gold with the names of Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The memo included a message indicating that it was "a useful gift for enjoying on the sofa on a rainy day," the Telegraph reported.

A spokesperson for Ferrero noted to the Telegraph, "We were happy to receive a request from the prime minister to create two jars of personalized Nutella for use as a national gift."

Nutella, made by adding hazelnuts and other ingredients to chocolate, is one of Italy's representative exports along with fine wine, cheese, and olive oil.

The Telegraph reported that Prime Minister Meloni also gifted personalized jars of Nutella to cabinet ministers as Christmas presents last year.

During this visit to Italy, Charles III met with Sergio Mattarella, the Italian president, and Prime Minister Meloni, and received a standing ovation for his speech that mixed Italian.

He also made a surprise visit to the Vatican to meet privately with Pope Francis, who is recovering from pneumonia.
