U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 11th (local time) that the basic rate of the reciprocal tariff, which he plans to suspend for 90 days for countries other than China, is 10%.
According to Reuters, President Trump met with reporters on a flight to Florida and noted, “There may be a few exceptions for clear reasons, but I would like to say that 10% or very close to that level is the floor.”
He mentioned that he is having discussions about tariff negotiations with many countries, saying, “We are in a very good position,” according to the White House press pool.
Earlier, President Trump announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs of more than 10% on the 4th. Consequently, a basic tariff of 10% has been in effect since the 5th, and tariffs exceeding 10% were imposed on the so-called 'worst offenders' starting on the 9th. However, immediately after implementation, this was suspended for 90 days for countries other than China.
Subsequently, the United States is conducting tailored negotiations with these countries. Scott Bensant, the Minister of Finance, mentioned on the 9th that the reciprocal tariff rate announced on the 2nd regarding individual countries is the ceiling, and the basic tariff rate of 10% is the floor.
On the same day, President Trump referenced China, which is responding with retaliatory tariffs, and mentioned that he has always gotten along well with President Xi Jinping, saying, “I think a positive outcome will result.”
Regarding government bonds, he stated, “There was a brief moment (of trouble), but I solved that problem quickly,” adding, “The bond market is doing well.”
In response to a question about whether the bond market issue influenced the decision to suspend the reciprocal tariff for 90 days for countries other than China, he suggested that it did not, according to the White House press pool.
President Trump commented on the upcoming talks between the U.S. and Iran in Oman on the 12th, saying, “I hope Iran becomes a wonderful and happy country,” adding, “But they cannot have nuclear weapons.”
Meanwhile, regarding the annual health check-up conducted earlier that day, he stated, “Overall, I felt that I am in very good shape,” and added, “I also took a cognitive test and got all the answers right.”
