According to AFP, local police reported that a building under construction near the Chatuchak market, a Bangkok landmark, collapsed, burying at least 43 workers. At that time, there were 50 workers at the construction site.

The police noted, "The building under construction collapsed due to the earthquake," adding, "The casualties have not yet been determined." Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a national emergency and began formulating measures.

Earlier, around 12:50 p.m., a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in central Myanmar. The epicenter was observed to be about 10 km deep, with strong tremors reaching Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand, over 1000 km away.

The scale of damage in Myanmar has not yet been determined; however, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that simulations indicate there is over a 70% probability that the death toll from this earthquake will exceed 1,000.
