President Donald Trump stated that Greenland is necessary for U.S. national security and reiterated the need for Greenland to be incorporated into the United States.
According to Politico, a U.S. political media outlet, on the 26th (local time), President Trump said in a radio interview that "we need to inform that Greenland is necessary for (the U.S.) international security" and added, "Greenland is needed for us not only in terms of defense but also in terms of offense."
He continued on Greenland, saying, "Seeing hundreds of boats moving up the coast, it is truly a busy place," and noted, "Without land in Greenland, we cannot properly defend not only the United States but many parts of the Earth. We need to have land, and we will have it."
During a press conference at the White House regarding the imposition of tariffs on automobiles, President Trump also responded to reporters, saying, "We need Greenland. The entire world, including Denmark, needs us to incorporate Greenland."
These remarks came ahead of the visit of U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his spouse to Greenland. The White House noted in a press release the previous day that the Vance couple is scheduled to visit the Pitufik base, the northernmost U.S. military base in Greenland, on the 27th.
Denmark and Greenland have expressed opposition to the Vice President and his spouse's visit. Múte Egede, the Prime Minister of Greenland, stated, "The Greenland government has never sent any invitations, whether for an official visit or a private visit," claiming that their visit is unilateral.
