U.S. President Donald Trump noted that he would impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico starting on the 4th as announced. Concerns are emerging that a tariff war among the three North American countries, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is intensifying.
On the same day, President Trump, while announcing Taiwan's foundry TSMC's investment plan for semiconductor production facilities in the United States, stated, "I will implement a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico starting on the 4th."
He further emphasized, "There is no room left for negotiation regarding the 25% tariff," adding, "All preparations are complete, and it will take effect tomorrow."
Initially, President Trump announced that he would impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada starting on the 4th of last month and an additional 10% tariff on China. After Mexico and Canada agreed to strengthen border security to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, President Trump postponed the tariff imposition for a month, just one day before its enforcement.
On the 27th of last month, President Trump changed his stance again, stating that he would impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada as scheduled on March 4, unless the influx of drugs into the United States is halted or significantly reduced. Following Trump's announcement, Mexico and Canada, which had been preparing countermeasures, found themselves in a sudden situation.
