On March 2 (local time), the star of the '97th Academy Awards' held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, United States, was 'Anora.'
The independent film 'Anora' achieved five awards at this Academy Awards. 'Anora' is a black comedy film that addresses class conflict based on the story of an American sex worker named 'Anora' who marries a Russian tycoon.
'Anora' won the best picture award, beating out strong competitors such as 'Brutalist,' 'Emilia Perez,' and 'Conclave.' This film also won the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival.
Director Sean Baker of 'Anora' won the best director, best original screenplay, and best editing awards simultaneously. Baker noted, "I would like to thank the Academy for recognizing true independent cinema," and said, "Independent film will endure for a long time."
The best actress award also went to Maiky Madison, who played the lead role of 'Anora.' Madison beat out Demi Moore of 'Substance,' who was considered a strong contender for the best actress award.
The best actor award was won by Adrien Brody, who portrayed a Holocaust survivor and Hungarian Jewish architect in 'Brutalist.' He said, "I pray for a healthier, happier, and more inclusive world beyond the aftermath of war and trauma, systemic oppression, anti-Semitism, racism, and othering."
This Academy Awards ceremony was held in a subdued atmosphere, as tens of thousands lost their homes due to the worst large-scale wildfire in LA's history. During the ceremony, firefighters were honored on stage, and ways to donate to wildfire victims were provided.
The congratulatory performances were also scaled back compared to previous years, with BLACKPINK's Lisa taking the stage as one of the performers, drawing significant attention. Lisa is the first K-pop artist to perform at the Oscars.
