On the 13th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would impose mutual tariffs on countries around the world.
On that day, President Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social, "A press conference on mutual tariffs will be held today at 1 p.m. (3 a.m. on the 14th Korea time) in the Oval Office (White House office)."
Mutual tariffs mean that the U.S. will impose tariffs on products from countries that apply tariffs on U.S. goods.
On the same day, he wrote on Truth Social, "It has been a great three weeks and probably the best ever," adding, "But today is an important day. Mutual tariffs!! Let's make America great again!!"
Additionally, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt noted during a press briefing the day before that the announcement of mutual tariffs would take place before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the White House on the 13th (Eastern Time).
Meanwhile, since his inauguration last month, President Trump has pushed for trade partner countries to address the trade imbalance by leveraging high tariffs as part of the trade war. Following the imposition of an additional 10% tariff on China on the 4th, he stated on the 10th that a 25% tariff would be imposed without exception on steel and aluminum imported into the U.S. starting on the 12th.
