Early on the 8th (local time), 41 people died in an accident involving a passenger bus and a cargo truck in southern Mexico.
According to Reuters, local authorities stated that 38 passengers and 2 drivers on the bus, as well as 1 truck driver, were among the 41 who lost their lives in the incident.
According to Reuters and local Mexican media, the accident bus, carrying 48 people, departed from Cancun, a tourist city in Mexico, the previous afternoon and was heading to Tabasco in southern Mexico when it suddenly crossed the center line and collided head-on with an oncoming cargo truck around 2:45 a.m.
Local media initially reported that about 30 people had died based on the early situation of the accident, but the death toll grew over time.
One source reported that the remains of 18 deceased individuals had been confirmed and that recovery operations were ongoing.
Survivors have been transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment; however, some are reported to be in critical condition.
Local authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident based on witness testimonies.
The bus operating company, Tourus Acosta, expressed profound regret on social media, saying, "We are cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the accident."
