Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, became the first former French president to wear an electronic bracelet.
According to the daily Le Parisien on July 7 (local time), Sarkozy, who received a final guilty verdict in December of last year on charges of bribing judges, began wearing the electronic bracelet today.
The court ordered the former president to wear the electronic bracelet starting July 7. He must wear the bracelet for the next year, and outings are allowed only at specific times.
Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, is accused of promising a senior position in exchange for receiving confidential information about the investigation into his illegal campaign financing in 2014.
The former president has consistently denied the charges, but on December 18 of last year, the French Supreme Court upheld the corruption and abuse of power charges, confirming a three-year prison sentence with a two-year probation.
Of the three years in prison, two years are probationary, meaning he will not have to serve time, and the remaining one year will be under house arrest with the condition of wearing an electronic bracelet. He has also been banned from running for public office for the next three years.
However, there are speculations that he may not have to complete the full year of house arrest, under French criminal procedure law, which allows inmates over 70 to apply for conditional release. Sarkozy was born on January 28, 1955, and recently turned 70.
