An analysis has emerged suggesting that North Korea has significantly improved the accuracy of its ballistic missiles through the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Reuters reported on the 6th (local time), citing senior Ukrainian sources, that the accuracy of North Korean ballistic missiles used by Russia has recently improved to between 50 and 100 meters. Compared to the initial accuracy of 1 to 3 kilometers, the accuracy has markedly improved.
A senior Ukrainian source noted, 'North Korea is improving its missile technology performance by testing it in real combat through the Ukraine war.'
Since late 2023, Russia has been receiving short-range ballistic missiles from North Korea for use in the war. The number of North Korean ballistic missiles used so far is estimated to be around 100.
Ukraine has analyzed the accuracy by comparing the presumed targets with the actual locations where missiles have landed, obtaining these results. No design changes have been confirmed compared to the past, but there is a high likelihood that the navigation system and steering devices have been improved. It is also possible that Russia has provided guidance systems to North Korea or enhanced target accuracy.
North Korean ballistic missiles can carry a warhead of up to 1 ton and have a maximum range of 800 kilometers. As North Korea improves the accuracy of its ballistic missiles through this war, the impact on the security of neighboring countries, including South Korea, is expected to increase.
