Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 14th that it will take part in Gastech 2026, the world's largest gas exhibition, to showcase technologies related to future energy and receive technical certifications from major classification societies at home and abroad.
Chief Executive Choi Sung-an of Samsung Heavy Industries, Lee Wang-geun, head of the shipbuilding and offshore institutional sector, and other key executives will attend the event, which runs in Bangkok, Thailand, from today through the 17th.
First, on this day, Samsung Heavy Industries is set to receive basic certification from the Korean Register (KR) for an ECA (engineering critical assessment)-based structural integrity evaluation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) independent fuel tank (Type-C) that reflects actual ship operating conditions.
On the 15th, Samsung Heavy Industries will also receive an approval in principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd's Register (LR) in the United Kingdom for a concept design that applies SENSE, its in-house developed natural gas liquefaction system, to topside facilities of a floating liquefied natural gas production unit (FLNG). For this concept design, it will also obtain a basic design review (BDR) from ABS.
An LNG liquefaction system is a core facility that cools natural gas to cryogenic temperatures to enable storage and transport. Samsung Heavy Industries said that by obtaining this certification for SENSE, it has established a foundation to apply the technology to FLNG. Samsung Heavy Industries will also sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with "Gas Entec," a Korea-based offshore plant engineering specialist, to commercialize SENSE licensing.
On the same day, Samsung Heavy Industries will sign a professional services agreement (PSA) with JERA Americas of the United States for an FSRU (floating LNG storage and regasification unit) project off Hawaii.
On the 16th, Samsung Heavy Industries is slated to receive an approval in principle from DNV of Norway for a composite support structure for storage tanks on very large gas and ammonia carriers. It will also sign an MOU with "Fulcrum LNG," an LNG development corporations, to target the FLNG market across five regions worldwide.
