Hanwha Ocean will unveil its self-developed 60MW-class floating data center (FDC) to the global market for the first time.
Hanwha Ocean said on the 13th it will showcase a 60MW-class FDC model at Gastech 2026, the world's largest gas exhibition, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from the 14th to the 17th. This is the first time Hanwha Ocean is revealing the FDC it is pursuing as a future new business in a real model form.
An FDC installs a data center on an offshore floating structure. It was developed as an alternative to offset constraints such as power supply and demand, site acquisition, and cooling efficiency faced by onshore data centers.
Hanwha Ocean's FDC is designed to generate its own power at sea and use seawater for cooling. With a modular design, it can adjust power generation and supply methods, server types, and data center capacity according to the installation area and customer requirements.
Hanwha Ocean is pushing its FDC business by combining its shipbuilding and offshore floating structure design and construction technologies with Hanwha Group's capabilities in data centers, power and energy, operations and maintenance (O&M), and security.
Recently, it obtained basic approval for the conceptual design of a 60MW-class FDC from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
At this Gastech, Hanwha Ocean will also unveil a model of a 174,000㎥ class carbon-free LNG carrier. The vessel is under development with a carbon-free electric propulsion system using an ammonia gas turbine. It aims to apply a fully carbon-free technology that does not use pilot oil even during ignition.
Executive Vice President Son Young-chang, head of product strategy and technology at Hanwha Ocean, said, "Gastech 2026 is a meaningful stage where Hanwha Ocean will present its floating data center, prepared as a future new business, to the global market for the first time," adding, "We will bring together the technologies accumulated in shipbuilding and offshore and Hanwha Group's energy and data capabilities to offer a new solution that supplements the limitations of onshore data centers and lead the global FDC market."
