Hanwha Systems developed a "space AI solution" that analyzes satellite imagery in real time with artificial intelligence (AI) and unveiled it in overseas markets for the first time.
Hanwha Systems said on the 10th that it held a launch event for its space AI solution at the "MSPO 2026" defense industry exhibition in Kielce, Poland, on the 9th (local time). At the event, it demonstrated AI analyzing in real time images of Eastern Europe taken by an operational satellite.
The space AI solution is a technology that reads and analyzes image data transmitted by satellites to ground stations using AI and extracts key information. It automatically detects objects and analyzes situation patterns and anomalies. It provides an integrated system from satellite image collection to AI-fused analysis and decision support.
In a military display scenario, it can track military movements and routes using satellite imagery. If a disaster occurs, it can be used to analyze changes in buildings and terrain in key areas to calculate the scale of the damage.
It can analyze both electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery, and it also has the capability to fuse the two types of data.
SAR satellites can capture images regardless of weather or time of day, but because they are black-and-white radar images, they are hard to read with the naked eye. Hanwha Systems said the space AI solution can identify aircraft, ships, and vehicles in SAR images by the second and enhance image resolution. It can complement the limitations of SAR imagery by combining it with EO satellite imagery capable of high-resolution imaging.
Hanwha Systems currently has a lineup of small SAR satellites with 1 m, 0.5 m, and 0.25 m resolution and is also developing a very-low Earth orbit (VLEO) ultra-high-resolution (UHR) SAR satellite with 0.15 m resolution. The company plans to use the space AI solution in connection with these SAR satellites.
It also implemented a dedicated interface that can be linked to Hanwha's strike systems such as the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the Cheonmu multiple-launch rocket system, as well as the fire direction center (FDC). Hanwha Systems expects this will improve the operational efficiency of weapons systems from satellite reconnaissance to strike.
A Hanwha Systems official said, "This space AI solution is a world-class technology that integrates analysis of EO and SAR satellite imagery, a game changer that transforms the value of satellite data beyond simple collection into immediate reconnaissance and tactical information," adding, "In step with Hanwha Group's investments in the space sector, we will complete a proprietary 'space-ground convergence infrastructure' that links VLEO SAR satellites and a space AI data center and lead the global defense and space markets."
