Samsung Heavy Industries will expand the scope of its industry-academia cooperation with the College of Engineering at Seoul National University and pursue talent development in shipbuilding and maritime fields as well as medium- to long-term global research and development (R&D) cooperation.
On the 2nd, Samsung Heavy Industries signed an agreement at Seoul National University's Gwanak campus to establish the "SHI-SNU Global Collaboration Research Center for Future Ship Technology." Attending the signing ceremony were Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Choi Sung-an, Seoul National University College of Engineering Dean Kim Young-o, and officials from the Samsung Heavy Industries Ship and Offshore Research Institute and the Seoul National University Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
The research center aims for medium- to long-term, convergent global research and development (R&D) cooperation related to future shipbuilding technologies and for the cultivation of global talent. The main areas of cooperation are: ▲ convergence of all shipbuilding and maritime sectors with energy technologies ▲ global networking and research cooperation ▲ training research personnel through industry-academia cooperative education.
Samsung Heavy Industries said it will use the center to combine fundamental technologies in shipbuilding and maritime fields with energy technologies to respond to eco-friendly (decarbonization) and next-generation fuel technologies, and to promote medium- to long-term research projects aimed at creating future markets.
Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has been carrying out industry-academia cooperation with Seoul National University since 2016. Samsung Heavy Industries said it has pursued technology cooperation with Seoul National University across related industries, including improving production efficiency through production data analysis and collaborating on eco-friendly fuel technologies, automation, and nuclear power.
Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Choi Sung-an said, "Seoul National University's outstanding research capabilities and talent have greatly contributed not only to the development of Samsung Heavy Industries but also to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea's shipbuilding and maritime industry," adding, "We will continue our collaboration to establish ourselves as a successful model of industry-academia cooperation."
