Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 31st it signed a contract to build two container ships for a shipowner based in Africa.
The total order value is 444.5 billion won, and the ships ordered this time are scheduled to be delivered by Dec. 2028.
Samsung Heavy Industries' cumulative orders this year in the merchant ship institutional sector total 35 vessels, $6.1 billion.
By type, they include 14 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers (including one LNG-FSRU), two very large ethane carriers (VLEC), four very large gas carriers (VLGC), four container ships, and 12 crude oil tankers.
Earlier this month, Samsung Heavy Industries won orders for two crude oil tankers, surpassing this year's merchant ship institutional sector order target of $5.7 billion.
This year's cumulative offshore institutional sector orders total $10.5 billion, including two FLNGs (floating LNG production, storage and offloading units), achieving 76% of the annual order target.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official said, "For container ships, orders are active for 8,000- to 13,000-TEU vessels due to demand for eco-friendly fleet replacements," and added, "Having exceeded the annual order target in the merchant ship institutional sector, we plan to focus more on selective, profitability-centered orders."
