LS Electric will establish a joint venture with GE Vernova, a global power infrastructure corporation, to strengthen its competitiveness in the voltage source converter high-voltage direct current (HVDC) business.
LS Electric said on the 26th that it signed a "strategic cooperation agreement to establish a voltage source HVDC joint venture" at "CIGRE 2026," the world's largest power grid technology exhibition, held in Paris, France, on the 25th (local time).
The joint venture's name was set as "Grid X Technology," reflecting the concepts of reliability, integration, and exchange in the power grid.
Through the establishment of the joint venture, the two corporations plan to pursue cooperation in the domestic voltage source HVDC market and to develop joint solutions and strategies, including the supply of key equipment and the joint execution of domestic HVDC projects. They also plan to build a cooperative framework to support the construction of next-generation power grids in Korea and to enter the global HVDC market.
LS Electric expects that cooperation with GE Vernova will further enhance the reliability of the government-led "West Coast Energy Expressway" project. The West Coast Energy Expressway is a national project to reliably transmit large-scale renewable energy produced in the Honam region and along the West Coast to the Seoul metropolitan area. For this project to succeed, core voltage source HVDC technology, proven project execution capabilities, and a stable supply chain are essential.
LS Electric has experience supplying key equipment for commercial HVDC projects. Following the domestic HVDC project between Bukdangjin and Godeok, LS Electric is currently supplying key equipment to the East Coast–metropolitan area HVDC project.
LS Electric also expanded its production infrastructure. At its Busan business sites, LS Electric built the nation's largest HVDC production base and has an integrated production system capable of handling the design, manufacturing, and performance testing of key equipment such as converter transformers (C-TR).
An LS Electric official said, "This joint venture will serve as a springboard to integrate the strategies of the two corporations," adding, "For large-scale projects such as the West Coast Energy Expressway, we expect it will provide customers with an efficient and competitive single window that combines the strengths of both corporations, while at the same time strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic HVDC industry."
