The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries labor union (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Metal Workers' Union Hyundai Heavy Industries branch) decided to hold a strike action vote to secure the right to strike.
According to the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries union on the 25th, the union began a strike action vote at 6:30 a.m. that day at the Ulsan headquarters and other sites for about 8,000 full members. The vote runs until 1:30 p.m. on the 27th of this month.
If the strike action is approved in this vote, the union will secure the legal right to strike. The previous day, the National Labor Relations Commission decided to "suspend labor dispute mediation," judging that there is a large gap between labor and management in the labor dispute mediation case they filed. The commission's mediation process is a requirement for the possibility of a strike action, and once the union holds a vote, it can legally strike.
The union noted that a strike vote has not been voted down in the past 10 years and expects this vote to pass as well.
As this year's collective wage and bargaining demands, the union is calling for a 149,600 won increase in the monthly base salary (excluding step increases), payment of at least 30% of operating profit as a performance bonus, and inclusion of vacation pay and congratulatory money in ordinary wages.
The union said, "We have been negotiating since June, but management has yet to present a proposal," maintaining that management must present an offer in response to the union's bargaining demands.
