Doosan Enerbility said on the 14th it won a contract to manufacture key equipment for the sodium reactor of TerraPower, a U.S. Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developer founded by Microsoft (MS) co-founder Bill Gates.
Doosan Enerbility will manufacture the reactor guard vessel, reactor support structures and reactor internal structures for TerraPower's sodium reactor. However, it did not disclose the contract size.
Doosan Enerbility signed a manufacturability review contract for core equipment of TerraPower's first unit in Dec. 2024 and has since developed and applied design improvements to support successful production. As a result, it raised the design maturity to a level that allows for production orders. Through years of effort, it built a strong foundation for collaboration that combines TerraPower's reactor technology and safety with Doosan Enerbility's advanced manufacturing capabilities.
TerraPower's first nuclear power plant is being built in Kemmerer, Wyoming, introducing an advanced reactor with a capacity of 345 megawatts (MW). The project is among the first next-generation nuclear power projects in the United States to enter the commercial-scale construction phase.
TerraPower has design technology for a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), a Generation IV reactor that uses liquid sodium as a coolant to transfer the heat generated in the fission process. The reactor, combined with a molten salt energy storage system, can boost power output to 500 MW. In addition to the first unit, TerraPower has signed contracts to deploy SMRs and is pursuing additional projects in the United States and worldwide.
TerraPower is receiving support from the U.S. government's policy to expand advanced nuclear power, and after obtaining a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), it began construction in the spring of 2026. The equipment supplied by Doosan Enerbility is expected to play an important role in the on-time construction and commercial operation of TerraPower's first unit.
Kim Jong-du, head of the Nuclear BG at Doosan Enerbility, said, "This manufacturing contract was signed based on the close cooperation and trust built with TerraPower over many years," and added, "While carrying out this project without a hitch, we will continue to strengthen our SMR manufacturing capabilities and expand our role as a global supplier."
