Genesis on the 13th unveiled a next-generation hybrid system that delivers driving feel on par with an electric vehicle. The system is slated to be installed in the GV80 hybrid, a midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) set to launch next month.
Genesis' 2.5 turbo hybrid system adopts a parallel layout with a starter motor (P1) for engine start and generation, and a drive motor (P2) for propulsion and regenerative braking. Combined maximum output is 352 horsepower, and combined peak torque is 54.0 kgf·m. Compared with the GV80 2.5 turbo model, maximum output is about 16% higher and peak torque is 26% higher. In the lab's own tests, it takes about 7.1 seconds to reach 100 kph from a standstill.
Fuel economy also improved. Based on the lab's own measurements comparing the GV80 19-inch 2WD five-seater model, combined fuel economy is more than about 25% higher than the 2.5 turbo model. Official fuel economy will be released after government certification.
Genesis' 2.5 turbo hybrid system is the first in Hyundai Motor Group's hybrid lineup to adopt a liquid-cooled hybrid battery system. The system can control battery temperature more efficiently. Thanks to this, it delivers higher maximum discharge output than air cooling and allows more active use of the battery.
The Genesis 2.5 turbo hybrid system also expands motor-driven operation to deliver a quiet driving environment and linear acceleration, securing an EV-level driving feel. To minimize vibration and noise that can occur when the engine engages during a cold start after parking, it was developed to actively use EV mode up to the point it reaches an initial 30 kph right after departure.
As a result, in situations where noise stands out, such as underground parking lots, it moves in EV mode, and after merging onto regular roads, it engages the engine when traveling above a certain speed so drivers can start off quietly and comfortably. It also controls the system to maximize use of EV mode on city streets with many traffic lights or in congestion, securing an even quieter driving environment.
Immediate throttle response akin to an EV is another feature of the Genesis 2.5 turbo hybrid system. In the lab's own measurements, when pressing the accelerator to increase speed while cruising at 100 kph, it can re-accelerate about 18% faster than the 2.5 gasoline turbo model, delivering agile power performance for passing and similar situations.
In addition, Genesis packed the 2.5 turbo hybrid system with hybrid-specific features such as Stay Mode, which lets users operate all in-car convenience functions without starting the engine; Hybrid layered predictive control (HPC), which manages battery state of charge; and Smart Regenerative Braking, which automatically applies braking force based on a comprehensive read of road information.
Meanwhile, Genesis also unveiled the design of the GV80 hybrid, scheduled to launch next month. Newly designed exterior grille and wheels emphasize a more upscale image.
Executive vice president Lee Si-hyeok, head of the Genesis Business Division, said, "We expect the new powertrain to deliver a distinct driving experience by finely balancing efficiency, quietness and performance," adding, "Starting with the GV80 hybrid, we will proactively respond to market shifts and customer demand while conveying Genesis' unique sensibility and philosophy through new technologies."
