Kolon Industries(120110) said on the 12th that it will push for the commercialization of the medical low-carbon polyacetal (POM) product "KOCETAL® ECO-E" (hereinafter ECO-E).
POM is an engineering plastic applied to a range of advanced industries, including automobiles, electric and electronic devices, and medical, based on its low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistance. Kolon Industries said this is the world's first commercialization of medical low-carbon POM.
ECO-E is characterized by being produced with e-methanol based on renewable energy instead of fossil fuel-based methanol. It maintains the strengths of existing POM—excellent physical properties and processability—while also delivering a carbon-reduction effect.
Kolon Industries aims to begin mass production of ECO-E for medical products in the second half of this year and start commercial supply from the fourth quarter. The company plans to strengthen its eco-friendly product portfolio by expanding sales of low-carbon engineering plastic products to high value-added industries such as automobiles, electricity, and electronics.
Jeong Hong-ryeong, head of the ENP Business Division at Kolon Industries, said, "This ECO-E supply is highly meaningful in that it established the world's first foundation for the commercialization of low-carbon POM within the medical portfolio," and added, "We will continue to focus on developing and expanding the supply of high-performance, low-carbon materials that can meet global customers' demands for a transition to sustainable materials."
