Hanwha Systems(272210) said on the 3rd that it successfully completed a demonstration of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based manned-unmanned teaming combat system for mine countermeasures.
The demonstration was conducted at the Naval Operations Command base in Busan under the assumption that unidentified maritime explosive threat intelligence had emerged, covering everything from mission plan generation to mine search and minesweeping (mine removal).
Centered on the AI-based automatic mine detection system (AMDS), a 30-ton (t)-class combat unmanned surface vessel, the Haeryeong reconnaissance unmanned surface vessel, and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for underwater search were used.
The mission was carried out using a low Earth orbit satellite communications-based hyperconnected network and command-and-control technology capable of simultaneously controlling multiple and various unmanned systems.
An AI mission-planning generation platform based on a large language model (LLM) received the mine threat information and ordered, "Generate a mission plan to find mines at the maritime explosion point."
The reconnaissance unmanned surface vessel and the manned minesweeper then departed in sequence, and a military drone (UAV) began aerial reconnaissance.
The autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) mounted on the reconnaissance unmanned surface vessel maneuvered autonomously according to the mission plan and searched for mines, and the collected data was transmitted in real time to the automatic mine detection system.
The automatic mine detection system then identified the minesweeping point through AI analysis, and the unmanned surface vessel and the minesweeper moved to the location and completed the operation.
Yoo Moon-gi, head of the marine division at Hanwha Systems, said, "We will focus on investment in and development of maritime unmanned systems, which will be a strategic asset for the future navy and a game changer in future naval warfare."
