Kim Dong-Kwan, the eldest son of Kim Seung-youn, chairman of Hanwha Group, has been promoted to senior vice chairman. The second son, Kim Dong-Won, president, and the third son, Kim Dong-Sun, executive vice president, were also promoted to vice chairman and president, respectively. Analysts say not only has the succession centered on Senior Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan entered its final stage, but each brother's business domain has been more clearly separated, establishing a system of accountable management.
Along with this, Hanwha Group also appointed new heads at five affiliates, including separating the CEOs of Hanwha Aerospace(012450) and Hanwha Systems(272210). It is seen as a full-scale overhaul of business divisions prompted by the fire at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant.
On the 30th, Hanwha Group said it will implement promotions of key executives and appointments of some affiliate CEOs effective Aug. 1. The centerpiece of the reshuffle is Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan's promotion to senior vice chairman. It comes four years after his promotion to vice chairman in Aug. 2022. The Hanwha Group senior vice chairman post had been vacant for two years since former Senior Vice Chairman Geum Chun-soo stepped down to an advisory role in May 2024.
Kim Dong-Won, president of Hanwha Life Insurance, was promoted to vice chairman, and Kim Dong-Sun, executive vice president of Hanwha Vision, was promoted to president. However, their areas of responsibility remain as before: ▲ defense, marine, space aerospace, and energy (Senior Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan) ▲ finance (Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Won) ▲ retail, leisure, and food and beverage (President Kim Dong-Sun).
With the promotion of the third-generation members of Hanwha Group, analysts say the succession centered on Senior Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan has reached its final stretch. The senior vice chairman's role is the central axis that leads the discovery of mid- to long-term future growth engines and sets priorities for major projects and investments. It means stronger control over the group.
Senior Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan's equity accumulation is effectively complete. He increased his personal stake in Hanwha Co., the group's holding company, from 4.9% at the start of last year to 9.8% by the end of last year, based on common shares. During the same period, Chairman Kim Seung-youn's stake fell from 22.7% to 11.3%. The largest shareholder of Hanwha Co. is Hanwha Energy with 22.2%, and the largest shareholder of that company is Senior Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Kwan (50%).
In addition, with Vice Chairman Kim Dong-Won and President Kim Dong-Sun's promotions, the third generation's accountable management structure has become more solid, leading to assessments that a stable succession framework is in place. On the 15th, Hanwha Co. held an extraordinary shareholders meeting and split into the surviving entity Hanwha Co. and a new company, Hanwha Machinery & Service Holdings, responsible for machinery, distribution, and services, securing President Kim Dong-Sun's independent track.
A Hanwha Group official said, "With these key executive promotions, we plan to dramatically enhance business capabilities in each field and put the drive on securing future growth engines, such as expanding business domains."
That day, Hanwha Group also announced nominees for new affiliate CEOs. The one drawing the most attention is Hanwha Aerospace. Previously, CEO Son Jae-il served concurrently as CEO of both Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems, but in this reshuffle, each company's chief was appointed separately. CEO Son Jae-il is under investigation on charges including violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act over a fire that broke out at the Daejeon plant in June.
The Hanwha Aerospace business division has tapped Lee Bu-hwan, head of Hanwha Aerospace's precision guided munitions (PGM) division, as the nominee. Lee, the nominee, is an expert in ground weapons system research and development (R&D) and overseas business who has served as head of Hanwha Aerospace's Europe unit and PGM division. He will take on a leading role in building overseas defense footholds.
Hanwha Systems will be led by Yang Gi-won, CEO of Hanwha Impact. An expert in new business models who has served as head of Hanwha Co.'s global division and head of Hanwha Impact's business division, Yang is considered the right person to expand global business in space and defense.
In addition, Hanwha Impact's business division CEO nominee is Kang Jeong-hoon, plant manager of Hanwha TotalEnergies in Daesan; Hanwha Asset Management's CEO nominee is Lim Dong-jun, head of Hanwha Asset Management's strategic business unit; and Hanwha Semitek's CEO nominee is Kim Ki-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Vision. They are to be appointed CEOs after going through each company's shareholders meeting and board of directors.
