Hyosung Heavy Industries(298040) said on the 29th that on the 28th (local time) it won an order for six 500-kilovolt (kV) ultra-high-voltage transformers from Brazil's hydropower and power equipment specialist Andritz Hydro.
The ultra-high-voltage transformers to be supplied this time are scheduled to be used at the Foz do Areia Hydroelectric Power Plant in Paraná state, Brazil.
Brazil ranks second in the world in hydropower generation capacity and produces more than 60% of its total electricity from hydropower. To meet rising electricity demand driven by recent industrial development, the government is pushing to expand generation capacity on a large scale.
Andritz Hydro is a leading local hydropower equipment and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company that handles more than 25% of Brazil's hydropower capacity.
Hyosung Heavy Industries also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for development cooperation on a hybrid STATCOM that combines its STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) with Andritz Hydro's synchronous condenser.
STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are core facilities that keep voltage and frequency in the power grid stable, and they are used in the generation of renewable energy such as wind and solar, which fluctuate rapidly with weather conditions.
Meanwhile, as of early this year, Hyosung Heavy Industries' Changwon plant surpassed a cumulative production value of 10 trillion won for ultra-high-voltage transformers.
