Korea Zinc will join Ulsan Metropolitan City and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) in a marine ecosystem restoration project in waters near the Onsan Smelter in Ulsan.
On the 28th, Korea Zinc said it signed a business agreement with Ulsan Metropolitan City and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) for a "private cooperation sea forest cultivation project" and will take part in the "sea forest cultivation" project.
Centered on restoring and managing the marine ecosystem by improving the marine habitat environment, the project will receive 100 million won in sponsorship from Korea Zinc. The Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) will handle project management, and Ulsan City will provide administrative support.
The project's main activities in waters around Pyeong-dong, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan include: ▲ creating seaweed spore dispersal zones ▲ improving seaweed habitat conditions.
The project will also manage populations of grazing animals such as sea urchins and turban shells, which feed on seaweed, to support stable seaweed growth. In addition, activities to collect marine debris such as nets and ropes will be carried out in parallel.
After the project is carried out, inspections will be conducted on seaweed growth and distribution and changes in marine life through diving surveys and monitoring.
