Doosan Enerbility(034020) said on the 27th that it signed a contract with DEI and DFHM, affiliates of China Dongfang Electric Group, to supply ultra-large forgings for steam generators to be used in units 5 and 6 of the Laiyang Nuclear Power Plant in Shandong province, China.
Ultra-large forgings for steam generators are core nuclear power plant equipment that produce steam using heat from a reactor, and the steam drives a turbine to generate electricity. The products measure 5 meters in diameter and weigh up to 130 tons.
Through this contract, Doosan Enerbility plans to sequentially supply a total of eight ultra-large forgings by 2029, including four channel heads and four tube sheets for the steam generators to be used in Laiyang units 5 and 6.
The steam generator channel head is a lower forging of the steam generator that serves as the passage through which reactor coolant flows into and out of the steam generator. The tube sheet is a key steam generator forging that supports thousands of heat transfer tubes and separates the reactor coolant from the secondary-side water.
Laiyang units 5 and 6 will use the CAP1400 design, China's next-generation 1,400-megawatt nuclear model. Doosan Enerbility won consecutive orders, following last year's forgings for the Laiyang units 3 and 4 steam generators and now those for units 5 and 6.
In particular, it was reportedly rated highly for quality and on-time delivery capabilities based on its past experience supplying steam generator forgings for the Haiyang AP1000 nuclear plant. Doosan Enerbility manufactures core nuclear components using one of the world's largest 17,000-ton presses and ultra-large forging technology and supplies them to the global nuclear market.
Kim Jong-du, Doosan Enerbility's president, said, "With the contract to supply core materials for units 5 and 6 following units 3 and 4 at Laiyang, Doosan Enerbility's technological strength and quality competitiveness have once again been recognized in the Chinese nuclear market, which is meaningful," adding, "We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in the global nuclear supply chain based on our accumulated manufacturing experience and ultra-large forging technology."
Meanwhile, China is continuing to push ahead with new nuclear plant construction under its nuclear expansion policy and aims to become the world's largest holder of nuclear power plants by 2035.
