HMM(011200) said on the 24th that, under its mid- to long-term strategy, it plans to invest 29 trillion won by the end of 2030. Excluding investments already executed under the mid- to long-term strategy released in 2024, the new investments increase the total by about 8.2 trillion won.
HMM held a board meeting on the morning of the day and approved its 2026 mid- to long-term strategy built around these details. Under the plan, by the end of 2030 the company will expand its container fleet to 166 ships and 1.47 million TEU, and its bulk fleet to 110 ships and 13.52 million DWT (deadweight tonnage).
In the container fleet goals HMM released this time, the total capacity decreased by 80,000 TEU compared with the previous target. However, the number of ships increased by 36. One TEU refers to the capacity to carry one 20-foot (ft) container.
Through this strategic disclosure, HMM said it would "strengthen the network of long-haul and short-haul routes based on a container hub-and-spoke system," which appears to mean reducing orders for large container ships and increasing orders for feeder ships (small and midsize vessels for short-sea routes).
In contrast, the bulk fleet target increases capacity by 960,000 DWT while keeping the number of ships the same. HMM said the goal is stable growth and expanded profitability based on long-term contracts using large bulk carriers.
HMM also said it will continue eco-friendly investments to secure terminal infrastructure at key overseas growth hubs and to achieve 2045 net zero (carbon neutrality). With these mid- to long-term investments, HMM is also targeting an average annual sales growth rate of 9% and a return on equity (ROE) of 4%.
HMM said, "We will build a stable business portfolio by strengthening competitiveness in the container, bulk, and port infrastructure businesses, and achieve sustainable growth and enhanced corporate value based on eco-friendly and digital transitions."
