At the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan shipyard, a foreign worker in his 20s employed by a subcontractor died in a crushing accident.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said in a disclosure on the 20th about a serious industrial accident that "on the 18th, one person died after being caught between a gondola and an upper platform at the shipbuilding division's outside dock."
The accident reportedly occurred when a Uzbekistan national, identified as A, boarded a gondola around 4:40 p.m. at Dock No. 8 (construction space) and was performing finishing grinding work on the outer hull surface. A was taken to Ulsan University Hospital but died.
Police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) are currently conducting an on-site investigation.
The Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office Ulsan Eastern Branch on the 19th issued a partial work stoppage order to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, halting all gondola operations for some hulls under construction inside the shipbuilding division's dock.
The Hyundai Heavy Industries branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union plans to demand an official apology from the CEO in connection with this serious industrial accident.
