Kim Deok-hwa, CEO of Funzin, said on the 9th, "In the military, artificial intelligence (AI) can assist commanders' decision-making," adding, "It can respond to crises quickly and accurately and contribute to defense."
Kim made the remarks at the "SME AX Leaders Forum," held at the Westin Josun Hotel in Jung District, Seoul, under the theme "From survival to growth." ChosunBiz, the economic outlet of the Chosun Media Group, hosted the forum to spread AI transformation (AX) among small and midsize enterprises and share success stories.
Funzin has KWM (Kill Web Matching), an AI technology used in defense. After analyzing battlefield information, it recommends what forces to deploy and how. The company said it demonstrated the technology in a Korea Combat Training Center (KCTC) combat experiment and during a joint Army-Navy-Air Force live-fire drill involving 1,400 participants.
Kim said, "AI verifies operational employability and serves as a staff officer to commanders in the military." He added, "Because AI processes information in real time, the military can break free from repetitive information analysis," and said, "AI can understand the battlefield while humans make decisions, allowing them to collaborate as one team."
Funzin is in its 20th year since establishment, but it did not focus on defense AI technology from the beginning. In the past, it pursued technology to improve telecommunications quality, the Internet of Things (IoT), and autonomous golf carts. Kim said, "In the case of autonomous driving, related regulations were not eased, and I thought the market was not ready yet."
Funzin later entered the defense AI market. Kim said, "There were difficulties when taking on new technologies and unfamiliar fields," but noted, "We began looking into customers' pain points that we heard at various seminars and exhibitions." He added, "We have pushed ahead with a spirit to overcome limits," and said, "We hope to contribute to defense with AI."
