LS Electric will operate the world's first 100% direct current (DC) power distribution plant. The plan is to establish a global standard for the DC ecosystem and move to secure leadership in the next-generation power market.
LS Electric said on the 2nd it held a "LS Electric DC Factory completion ceremony" at its Cheonan plant in South Chungcheong. The newly completed LS Electric DC Factory is the world's first DC power distribution manufacturing facility equipped with LS Electric's DC-dedicated core devices, including a solid-state transformer (SST), a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB), and an energy storage system (ESS).
DC distribution reduces power loss that occurs when converting alternating current (AC) power to direct current, maximizing energy efficiency. According to LS Electric, the DC Factory has proven it can raise the plant's overall energy efficiency by more than 10%.
LS Electric plans to target the global DC market based on the demonstration data and technology secured at the DC Factory. The flagship product is G2, a power conversion system (PCS) for next-generation battery-integrated ESS jointly developed with LG Energy Solution.
Chae Dae-seok, LS Electric CEO, said, "The Cheonan DC Factory is a historic milestone as the AC-centered power paradigm shifts to DC," and added, "We will lead the global power market in the AI era based on our DC-based core devices and manufacturing demonstration experience."
The event was attended by Chae Dae-seok, LS Electric CEO, Lee Ho-hyun, 2nd vice minister of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and Kim Dong-cheol, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) president, among other key officials.
Afterward, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Institute of Energy Technology, LS Cable & System, Hyosung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Electric, and LG Electronics signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to build a research complex specialized in global DC technologies and to cooperate on joint technology research.
