Dongkuk Steel Mill said on the 24th that its cumulative production of structural steel surpassed 25 million tons.
Dongkuk Steel Mill said it held a ceremony at its Pohang plant on the 23rd to mark achieving "25 million tons of cumulative structural steel production" and the stabilization of production for the "D-Mega Beam." About 70 people attended, including Chief Executive Choi Sam-young, Pohang Plant Manager Lee Chi-gwang, more than 20 other executives, union leaders, and production workers.
Structural steel is a steel product with a cross-sectional shape used for the frameworks of structures such as bridges and buildings. According to Dongkuk Steel Mill, 25 million tons of structural steel could build about 3,500 Eiffel Towers, and in length, based on a "standard H-beam (300㎜×300㎜)," it could wrap around the Earth six and a half times.
Dongkuk Steel Mill said it produced 25 million tons 29 years after first operating its structural steel mill in December 1997.
At the event, Dongkuk Steel Mill also marked the "completion of the D-Mega Beam production system." The D-Mega Beam is a structural steel product made by welding plate, a high value-added product that Dongkuk Steel Mill first produced last year. According to Dongkuk Steel Mill, sales of the product are increasing as large infrastructure projects such as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, plants, and logistics centers grow.
Dongkuk Steel Mill said it stabilized the D-Mega Beam production system over the past year through precision research, including adjusting weld angles.
Dongkuk Steel Mill CEO Choi Sam-young said, "I express deep gratitude for your hard work as the result of the thought and effort you poured into producing and selling the diverse products customers demand," adding, "In a market that is becoming increasingly advanced, let's lead the future market with the strength of collaboration unique to Dongkuk Steel Mill."
Pohang Plant Manager Lee Chi-gwang said, "From the excitement of producing the first product to the time we have run nonstop for 29 years, our journey has been anything but short," and added, "I firmly believe the Pohang plant can continue steady growth by leading the introduction of AI technology as it heads toward a new milestone as a Smart Factory."
