Taihan Cable & Solution said on the 17th it won a contract for the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) 500-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Donghaean–Dong Seoul construction project (EP2 phase).
The contract is worth 146.3 billion won, and Taihan Cable & Solution will carry out the project on a turnkey (Turn-Key) basis, from manufacturing and supplying 500 kV HVDC XLPE cables and related accessories to installation.
The Donghaean–Dong Seoul HVDC project is a national core power grid initiative to stably supply to the greater Seoul area the electricity produced by nuclear, thermal, and large-scale renewable generation in the Donghaean region.
The project consists of two 500 kV-class HVDC power line sections and one 70 kV-class neutral line section, and Taihan Cable & Solution will supply and install a 500 kV HVDC XLPE cable system totaling about 86 km.
Taihan Cable & Solution was the first in Korea to develop and commercialize a 500 kV HVAC cable system and has supplied it to North America multiple times. Building on this technology, the company also succeeded in developing Korea's first 500 kV current-source HVDC and 525 kV voltage-source HVDC cable systems, expanding its technological competitiveness into the ultra-high-voltage direct current transmission field.
Leveraging its technological competitiveness, Taihan Cable & Solution is expanding business results in global markets. In the United States, it won a 320 kV-class HVDC grid project, strengthening its presence in North America, and in the United Kingdom it signed an HVDC cable system framework agreement with National Grid, the grid operator, laying the groundwork to target the European market.
A Taihan Cable & Solution official said, "Based on experience executing domestic HVDC projects, we will further raise our competitiveness in national grid projects, including the 'West Coast energy expressway,' and in the global grid market," adding, "We will expand our role as a corporations that contributes to building a stable power grid and the energy transition."
Taihan Cable & Solution is accelerating efforts to strengthen production and construction capabilities. The company is building an HVDC-dedicated test center in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and constructing a second submarine cable plant capable of producing 640 kV-class HVDC submarine cables.
