The Genesis racing team of Hyundai Motor Group's luxury brand succeeded in finishing the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the third round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Genesis set a record as the first Korean entry at Le Mans along with a finish. The winner of this event was Toyota, which had a fierce battle with Cadillac, marking its sixth victory.
The GMR #19 car driven by Matthieu Jaminet, Paul-Loup Chatin, and Dani Juncadella of the Genesis Magma Racing Team (MGR) placed 13th in the 24 Hours of Le Mans held on the 14th (local time) at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France. The total number of laps recorded by GMR #19 over 24 hours in this event was 372 laps (Toyota 381 laps). Its best lap time for the 13.626 km circuit was 3 minutes 27.645 seconds. The total distance covered during the event exceeded 5,068 km.
The Genesis Magma Racing Team fielded two cars, #19 and #17. The #17 car, driven by André Lotterer, Luís Felipe Derani, and Mathis Jamin, retired after striking a track curb and suffering a suspension issue during the run. It came about 16 hours after the race began. It was disappointing, as the team had been running smoothly in the midfield through the middle stages.
Along with the GMR #17 car, four others, including BMW and Cadillac, also retired.
With 12 hours and 30 minutes left, the #19 car also came to a stop on track for eight minutes. It spent about 70 seconds in the pit (service area) due to an electrical system problem, prompting observations that Genesis might miss its stated official target. However, it returned to the race normally afterward and ultimately met the goal by finishing with a better-than-expected result.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the third round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) organized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), is a race in which a team's drivers take turns lapping a 13.626 km track for 24 hours.
Victory at this WEC Le Mans 24 Hours went to the Toyota #7 car. The Toyota #8 car also took third, solidifying the brand as the top manufacturer at Le Mans this year. BMW finished second.
The next WEC round is the "São Paulo 6 Hours," to be held in Brazil on July 12.
