K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. said on the 12th that it obtained level 1 of the U.S. Department of Defense's "Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC)," becoming the first mid-sized shipbuilder in Korea to do so.
CMMC is the U.S. Department of Defense's evaluation and certification of the information protection capabilities of corporations participating in the U.S. defense industry supply chain. It is required when taking part in the U.S. defense procurement market and U.S. Navy ship maintenance projects.
K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. explained that the level 1 certification it obtained means it has a cybersecurity system capable of securely protecting federal contract information (FCI).
A K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. official said, "This certification is an achievement that officially recognizes that K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.'s information protection system meets the security requirements of the U.S. Department of Defense," and added, "Based on this, we will move in earnest to participate in the U.S. Navy ship MRO business and will also prepare step by step to obtain CMMC level 2 certification."
Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy has recently expanded cooperation with Korea's shipbuilding industry to resolve a shortage of maintenance capacity. Accordingly, major shipbuilders in Korea are moving to enter the market for ship maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).
K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has completed its application to conclude a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) and is proceeding with the process to secure eligibility to enter the U.S. Navy ship MRO business.
