The transmission network consolidation connecting Muan County and Sinan County in South Jeolla Province has been completed.
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and Korea Power Exchange (KPX) said on the 7th that a 154-kilovolt (kV) transmission network consolidation connecting Muan County and Sinan County was completed on the 30th. The transmission network is a 52-kilometer section linking Unnam, Sinan, and Eupdong in South Jeolla.
Most of the route of the newly completed transmission network runs through island areas, requiring a total of 22 crossings between islands, and the line length between islands reaches up to 2 km. The tower height is 263 meters, the highest in Korea.
KEPCO said that with the transmission network consolidation connecting the Muan area and the Sinan area in South Jeolla coming online, the capability to transmit power to demand centers has been strengthened, easing renewable energy curtailment in South Jeolla and resolving the connection waitlist for about 190 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.
Curtailment is a measure to intentionally reduce or forcibly stop power production to maintain grid stability. Even if electricity is generated from renewables such as solar and wind, curtailment occurs if there are not enough transmission lines. Renewable energy curtailment in South Jeolla happened only twice in 2023, but increased steadily to 27 times in 2024 and 82 times in 2025.
KEPCO President Kim Dong-cheol said, "We will push without fail to expand the power grid to secure national competitiveness, including accelerating renewable energy grid interconnection and supporting advanced strategic industries," adding, "As power facility construction projects are carried out nationwide amid diverse local and topographical constraints, we will relentlessly pursue the development of new technologies and new construction methods to overcome them."
