HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which is participating as a "one team" with Hanwha Ocean in the bid for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) worth up to 60 trillion won, said on the 28th that on the 26th (local time) it visited the Ottawa office of Davie Shipbuilding in Canada and discussed ways to strengthen strategic cooperation across shipbuilding and naval programs.
At the meeting, executives of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, as the world's No. 1 shipbuilder, introduced their shipbuilding technology and the strengths of K-submarines, and exchanged views on cooperation plans for the development of Canada's shipbuilding industry.
Davie Shipbuilding in Quebec, Canada, founded in the early 19th century, is the country's largest shipyard and has a track record of building a wide range of vessel types, including icebreakers, offshore plants, and naval support ships.
Davie Shipbuilding owns Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said it expects that combining its own technological capabilities with Davie's local infrastructure will evolve into a long-term strategic partnership that spans the Arctic market.
In addition, President Joo Won-ho of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and other executives attended the welcome ceremony for the arrival of the Dosan Ahn Changho class (KSS-III) Submarine and a reception hosted by the ambassador to Canada at Esquimalt Naval Base in Victoria, British Columbia, on the 23rd, promoting the strengths of K-submarines to key local figures as they entered the final stage of the bidding race.
Joo said, "We are joining forces to share capabilities and expand our business areas in shipbuilding and naval programs with Canada's representative shipyards, such as Davie Shipbuilding and Irving Shipbuilding," adding, "We will do our utmost so that the 'K-defense one team' can win the Canadian submarine program, taking the lead in shipbuilding cooperation with Canada."
Earlier, as part of offset trade to win the Canadian submarine order, HD Hyundai prepared in Jan. a plan led by HD Hyundai Oilbank in the energy sector to import crude oil worth several trillion won from a Canadian oil company. In shipbuilding, it proposed cooperation worth several trillion won, including transferring know-how on building merchant ships and naval vessels to local shipyards and providing comprehensive consulting for submarine operations and maintenance.
