Hanwha Solutions Qcells division (Qcells) said on the 21st it will supply domestically manufactured solar cells and modules to a solar power project led by Korea South-East Power (KOEN).
The project is a solar power plant that Korea South-East Power (KOEN) is building in Munnamyeon, Haenam-gun, South Jeolla Province. Korea South-East Power (KOEN) plans to complete the plant by June 2028 on a site of about 1.4 million pyeong (4.79 km²). It will be built at 400 megawatts (MW), the largest single-site capacity in Korea.
On the 20th, Korea South-East Power (KOEN) selected the preferred bidder for the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor to carry out this project. The EPC company plans to install about 640,000 solar modules using cells produced in Korea by Qcells.
In particular, the solar cells and modules supplied for this project will be produced entirely at Qcells' Jincheon plant in North Chungcheong, the largest manufacturing base in Korea. This is significant for strengthening the domestic manufacturing-based renewable energy supply chain. As global supply chains are reorganized and trade conditions change, stable supply capabilities and reliability of quality are becoming more important, and the role of corporations with domestic production bases and proven quality competitiveness is expected to continue expanding.
Yu Jaeyeol, head of Korea business at Qcells, said, "By supplying high-efficiency Korea-made solar cells and modules to a large-scale project, we have created an opportunity to prove the technological competitiveness of Korea's solar industry," and added, "In particular, if the government's policy to expand renewable energy continues along with broader use of domestically produced products, it is expected to have a positive impact on restoring Korea's solar industry ecosystem and increasing related investment."
