42dot, Hyundai Motor Group's Global Software Center, on the 21st unveiled the core technology of GLEO artificial intelligence (AI), a large language model (LLM)-based in-vehicle voice agent. Unlike existing in-car agents, the key is that it is designed to communicate like a "person," such as understanding and judging the occupant's intent. GLEO AI is expected to be expanded to all models across Hyundai Motor Group.
According to 42dot, GLEO AI is a voice AI agent developed as an in-vehicle technology. Development began in 2024, and it was first installed across the group in Hyundai Motor's newly launched Grandeur. Beyond simply executing commands, it was made to enable natural, human-like communication by recognizing the speaker's location and taking into account conversational context and driving conditions.
What makes this possible is GLEO AI's architecture. It is designed so that various LLMs can be selectively used according to stage-specific purposes, such as understanding, judgment, and answer generation. 42dot said this architecture is optimized for "perception-judgment-execution." GLEO AI's LLM understands conversational context and the speaker's intent to infer and distribute tasks. It plays the key role of generating information and response sentences to match user intent.
GLEO AI's hybrid architecture processes vehicle and system tasks that require reliability on-device, while tasks that need high-performance computation are executed in the cloud. It is designed for fast responsiveness. LLM-based TTS (text to speech) technology generates natural-sounding voice. This feature can be linked not only with default system apps but also with external apps.
Thanks to this, GLEO AI can directly control vehicle functions and apps so that navigation, climate control, media, and vehicle settings can be configured through conversation. It can also perform different actions depending on the speaker's seat position or vehicle status. Whereas existing AI voice assistants operated only on simple command phrases and needed human intervention, GLEO AI can handle it through conversation alone.
In addition, 42dot built a knowledge agent to provide external information through GLEO AI. It can now find information based on web searches and proprietary data. It can also summarize and reorganize it.
42dot said it will continue to improve GLEO AI's features through OTA (over-the-air) updates.
Park Min-woo, CEO of 42dot, said, "GLEO AI, as a "travel companion that eases my effort," will be further advanced to perform more functions naturally and understand context."
