Hyundai Motor Group will build hydrogen infrastructure in Hong Kong in partnership with local corporations.
Hyundai Motor Group said on the 18th at the opening of the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre that it will pursue a hydrogen value chain that spans production, charging and transport infrastructure, and the rollout of hydrogen vehicles. Ten corporations in Korea and Hong Kong, including Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, will take part in the value chain.
Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor will oversee the overall business, including hydrogen production and use and the construction of charging stations, and will supply hydrogen mobility. Hyundai Engineering & Construction will build hydrogen production facilities optimized for the local climate. Chun Wo Construction in Hong Kong will handle charging-station construction and maintenance.
Hong Kong's hot and humid climate causes gases such as methane to be emitted from waste. Hyundai Motor Group decided to establish a resource-circulation model that breaks this down to produce hydrogen. The core plan of the agreement is to supply passenger and commercial vehicles that use the secured hydrogen as a fuel source and to expand hydrogen charging stations.
Hong Kong in particular relies on imports for 98.7% of its total energy sources. The territory is also small and mountainous, making it difficult to secure a clean energy chain based on solar or wind. With the need to cut carbon emissions, hydrogen is being cited as a key alternative.
In fact, since 2024 the Hong Kong government has been fostering the hydrogen industry, including by creating a fund to support hydrogen commercial vehicles and charging-station infrastructure. In particular, with tourism demand rising sharply and logistics movements around the Port of Hong Kong becoming more active, it is interpreted that the potential for greater carbon-reduction effects when introducing hydrogen passenger or commercial vehicles has also been taken into account.
Vice President Shin Seung-gyu of Hyundai Motor Group said, "In step with Hong Kong's proactive hydrogen policies, this is about promoting the creation of a local hydrogen ecosystem based on Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen business capabilities and experience."
