Kia has launched the purpose-built vehicle (PBV) "PV5" in Japan. As demand for small and midsize EV vans grows under the Japanese government's electrification expansion policy, attention is on whether it will secure market share.
Kia said on the 13th that it held the "Kia PV5 official market launch event" at the Kia PBV Japan Tokyonishi directly managed store in Tokyo. Vice President Kim Sang-dae, head of Kia's PBV Business Division, and Tajima Yasunari, CEO of Kia PBV Japan, attended.
At the event, Kia announced the start of local orders for PV5, its first dedicated PBV model, and introduced its plan to enter the Japanese market based on its global PBV business strategy. In line with the Japanese government's carbon-neutral policy to convert 30% of new-car sales to EVs by 2030, the aim is to capture demand with electrified PBVs such as the PV5.
Kia applied a host of features to the PV5 to meet the needs of Japanese consumers. Its PBV-specialized technology, the "Flexible Body System," which modularizes major parts such as the body, doors, and tailgate, lets customers combine modules as they wish to configure the body. Based on a body measuring 4,695 mm in length and 1,895 mm in width, the PV5 secures a turning radius of 5.5 m, enabling efficient driving even on Japan's narrow roads, Kia said.
Japan's local charging standard CHAdeMO is also applied as standard. Kia said the PV5 can become a new option in Japan, where EV choices are limited, while also helping address issues such as increased logistics, labor shortages, and gaps in local transportation.
Kia will first introduce the PV5 passenger and cargo models locally, then expand the lineup to the PV5 WAV for older adults and people with disabilities. In 2028, it plans to boost local sales by launching the successor model, the PV7.
Kia partnered with Sojitz, a major Japanese general trading company, to launch a new corporation, "Kia PBV Japan," in April last year. The corporation currently operates a total of seven dealerships and 52 service centers, including the Tokyonishi directly managed store. Within the year, it plans to establish a network of 11 dealerships and 100 service centers to expand its sales and service network.
